Yes. Better than takeout coleslaw. There I said it. I guarantee once you try this, you’ll never go back to store bought.
I know it’s very unconventional, and yes, I have mixing bowls, but… I make my coleslaw in a ziploc bag. In case you’re going to ask if that’s a ziploc bag inside a vase sitting in my kitchen sink, YES. Yes it is.
The method started when I moved and didn’t have mixing bowls or plastic containers and needed to improvise. Since then it’s stuck. Ziploc bags mean no mess, no dishes to clean, and it can easily be tossed in the fridge to marinate until I’m ready for it.
So go on, grab the ingredients you almost definitely already have anyway, and let’s prep this coleslaw.

Better than Deli Coleslaw
Ingredients
- ½ cup whole mayonnaise or oil
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup vinegar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Black pepper, to taste
- Garlic powder, to taste
- 1 bag coleslaw mix
- Craisins
- Thin chow mein noodles
Instructions
- Whisk the mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, salt, pepper and garlic together in a bag or bowl until smooth and incorporated.
- Toss in the coleslaw mix. Squeeze the air out of the bag and shake to mix well.
- Refrigerate until ready to serve, then top with craisins and chow mein noodles.
