Hot Dog Potato Goulash

Because sometimes (read: most of the time) you just need some childhood Hungarian soul food to make everything ok. This is also the go to last minute dinner when you think “what AM I feeding them tonight”. This is an excellent Pre Pesach meal as it does not require lots of preparation and does not contain any chometz that can be tracked through the house.

YES my friends a dinner for the kids and the adults. For real. Ready in under an hour, it’s perfect for those crazy days or late nights, simple enough to have the kids help make, and pretty much impossible to mess up.

Hot Dog Potato Goulash

Servings 4 servings
Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 40 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 10 minutes

  • 2 onions, diced
  • 5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar or a splash of dry red wine, optional
  • 6 potatoes, cubed
  • 1 (8-10) pack hot dogs, sliced into ½-inch coins
  • 2 ½ – 3 teaspoons kosher salt
  • Freshly cracked black peppercorns or white pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, optional, to taste
  • 1 ½ tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup

  • In a large saucepan or dutch oven heat oil over medium heat. Sauté the onions until lightly golden. Add paprika and stir for 10 seconds. Deglaze the pan with vinegar or wine, if using. Stir for 30 seconds.
  • Pour in 2 ½ – 3 cups water. Add the raw cubed potatoes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, tomato paste, sugar, and ketchup. Cook on low-medium heat for about 35 minutes. When the potatoes are fork tender add the hotdogs and cook another ten minutes.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste.

  • Use whatever types of potatoes you have on hand. I used Yukon and Idaho.
  • If you prefer chicken or turkey dogs instead of beef, then use that instead!
