Few dishes bring as much joy to the dinner table as a hearty plate of Spaghetti & Meatballs. It’s a classic comfort food that never fails to satisfy, and today, I’m sharing my go-to recipe for Sweet & Sour Meatballs that will elevate your spaghetti game to a whole new level of deliciousness.

Sweet & Sour Spaghetti & Meatballs

Ingredients

Sweet & Sour Meatballs Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds ground beef or veal
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon onion soup mix
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or fresh minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Sauce Ingredients:

  • 2 onions diced
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 15- ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

Sweet & Sour Meatballs Instructions:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef or veal, eggs, breadcrumbs, kosher salt, onion soup mix, garlic powder (or fresh garlic), and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

Sauce Instructions:

  • In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the diced onions and sauté until tender.
  • Once the onions are soft, add the hot water, tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, lemon juice, soy sauce, and red wine vinegar to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a bit of water to create a slurry. Add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce mixture and stir well.
  • Simmer the sauce for 5-10 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly.
  • Add the prepared meatballs to the skillet, making sure they are fully submerged in the sauce.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the meatballs simmer in the sauce for about an hour, stirring occasionally.

Notes
