Few dishes bring as much joy to the dinner table as a hearty plate of Spaghetti & Meatballs. It’s a classic comfort food that never fails to satisfy, and today, I’m sharing my go-to recipe for Sweet & Sour Meatballs that will elevate your spaghetti game to a whole new level of deliciousness.
Sweet & Sour Spaghetti & Meatballs
Ingredients
Sweet & Sour Meatballs Ingredients:
- 2 pounds ground beef or veal
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon onion soup mix
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder or fresh minced garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Sauce Ingredients:
- 2 onions diced
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 15- ounce can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Instructions
Sweet & Sour Meatballs Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef or veal, eggs, breadcrumbs, kosher salt, onion soup mix, garlic powder (or fresh garlic), and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
Sauce Instructions:
- In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the diced onions and sauté until tender.
- Once the onions are soft, add the hot water, tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, lemon juice, soy sauce, and red wine vinegar to the skillet. Stir to combine.
- In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a bit of water to create a slurry. Add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce mixture and stir well.
- Simmer the sauce for 5-10 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly.
- Add the prepared meatballs to the skillet, making sure they are fully submerged in the sauce.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the meatballs simmer in the sauce for about an hour, stirring occasionally.
